Corporation and City of New York Exploit the Tradition of “Ghost Bike”
Posted by Kyle under: bikes; news; politics .

Check out Erik Burke’s post about what DKNY and the City of New York are doing in the name of “Bicycle Advocacy,” at www.overunder.blogspot.com. Perhaps this endeavour advocates cycling, however I’m skeptical being that the only information on the bike is DKNY.com. It could also be seen as discrediting “Ghost Bike” ceremonies, and or confusing those who are familiar with that tradition. Judge for yourselves.

What do they say, “Any publicity is good publicity”? If this gives bicycling a greater share of mind and encourages people to bike commute, it can’t be bad. Heck, if it just gets people to think about Ghost Bikes and the killed cyclists, it would be good.

Yeah, but it seems lame to me. It’s easy to ignore something chained to a post no matter what color or shape it is. Best advocacy tool would be MORE PEOPLE ON BIKES!!!

The ghost bikes already do remind us of cyclists who have lost their lives–and unfortunately, they are already scattered all over the five boroughs. As for promoting cycling: we have plenty of bicyclists, bike activists, and yes even city agencies, doing so already, thank you.
DKNY’s so-called support of cycling appears to be limited to simply linking NYC gov Web sites (distributing maps and helmets produced at public expense) on their commercial Web site. (Oh but I forgot…they are also giving away one free Huffy folding bike! You can register up to 20 times!)
We don’t need these ugly, nonfunctional, self-serving advertisements clogging our streets. But leave it to the arrogant fashion mafia to think that nothing happens until they notice it. Fckin parasites.
