Building a Bike Town

“Cycling Stature in Portland can also be traced directly to support from the city.”

Leah sent me this link to a video on Cycling in Portland from the New York Times. If Reno cycling is to approach the accomplishments that Portland has achieved we need the residents to understand and actively support the personal, economical and social benefits of bike transportation, cycle commuting and bicycle culture and to demand that the city and county governing bodies take action in making bikes and cycling infrastructure a major part of the future of Reno as a sustainable city.

As a side note the North American Handmade Bike Show was like little-Portland last year in San Jose. Apparently they all love the city so much they don’t want to leave?  Big features @ NAHBS were city bikes and cargo bikes…

Living in Portland for 5 years, I can honestly say that the City of Roses was so much fun to ride in. ALl the main street and bridges takes bikers into consideration. Additionally, motorists and very aware of cyclists on the streets.

I don’t believe people bike because it’s cheaper and faster, like one person commented in the video. Portland is rainy as hell. Most of the time riding, you’re soaking wet and cold. It’s the passion of riding and getting out.

It’s also knowing that there’s other bikers sharing the road with you. I loved riding over the Hawthorne bridge (Portland) on Fridays and getting FREE coffee and doughnuts (on the bridge) just for being a bike commuter! The biking community is strong and self sufficiant there for sure. I see it growing here in Reno and I am stoked to see the bike community population.

Now, if we could get a Voodoo Doughnuts shop, Stumptown Coffee and some more micro breweries I’d be in way stoked!

I’m really excited to see that Reno’s bike community is growing. Having not experienced Portland’s awesome bike culture, its hard to share such memories as the Hawthorne bridge (Portland), but… with that in mind I think I need to take my bike down to PDX, and check it out for myself!
