Bay Area making steps and progress

Posted by Lane under: bikes.

After three years of dragging their feet, the City of San Francisco is recognizing the need of bicyclist. Courts will decide this week to begin stripping new bike lanes, installing bike racks and enacting other bike improvements by the fall. ”I think this is going to be the biggest step the city’s ever taken on its commitment to sustainable transportation,” said Leah Shahum, executive director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, an advocacy organization with considerable political clout at City Hall. “The bicycle plan has the potential to be a real turning point for the city in the way we use our streets.”

For a big city being big on green efforts, biking is making its footprint in the political world. Watch out Reno…..

Trailer!!!

Reno Bike Project and Holland Project are stoked to announce an epic movie premier, right here in the biggest little city, “Veer”. A documentary film about bicycle culture and life, the premier is right up the alley of the local bicycle community.

TUESDAY, JUNE 23RD, DOORS AT 7PM, SCREENING AT 8PM                                                                                        Nevadan Hotel, 3rd Floor Club Cal Neva (West side of Virginia Street)

On the heels of National Bike Month, the Tour De Nez and the Reno Film Festival, Reno’s cycling culture gets a special pre-release screening of Veer. This award-winning, feature length documentary film explores America’s fast-growing bicycling culture by profiling five people whose lives are inextricably tied to bicycling and the bike-centric social groups they belong to. The film follows these characters over the course of a year, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their personal struggles and triumphs.

Described as a “breakthrough documentary,” the film made its world premiere at the Victoria Film Festival earlier this summer and has won a Jury Award for Best Doc at the Calgary Film Festival, won Best Documentary at the Calgary Underground Film Festival, and was nominated for Best Documentary at the San Joaquin International Film Festival. Veer examines what it means to be part of a community, and how social movements are formed.

Hope to see everyone there with their bike gear on, awesome attitudes, and the excitement for a great movie for a great bike community.

Thanks Everyone!!!

Mayor’s Ride 2009 Visits RBP

Posted by Lane under: bikes.

Reno Bike Project was visited last week by a very unique individual, Martin Krieg, who is riding is backwards Hiwheel across the U.S., from San Francisco to Boston May 3-August 2. This incredible feat will completed on this bike. (Krieg is on the far right, in the blue shorts).

Krieg heard about Reno Bike Project and wanted to stop by to community bike shop. We were stoked! After talking and getting to know Krieg, his story behind why he is doing this is even more incredible. In his book Awake Again, after being pronounced clinically dead, wavering between life and death from a head injury, Martin Krieg regained consciousness but was paralyzed and completely helpless. The book tells what it feels like to be in this state and how a victim of head injury reacts to strange and terrifying surroundings - powerful, seductive forces which pull the patient from the outside world into nothingness. As he began to recover, the bicycle became Martin’s favorite rehabilitation tool,. His tremendous comeback efforts are chronicled, including his much publicized transAmerica ride sponsored by the National Head injury Foundation. Finally, Martin shares his goal for a more fit and healthy America by describing his plans for a national bicycle highway.

For now, Krieg is making is way across the U.S. and RBP was honored and stoked to have such an awesome guy come by the shop.

Follow Krieg here!
